How we are helping families cope with COVID-19

We asked families we work with what they need most

In mid-March, we called 754 Tiny Totos families to find out how COVID-19 was affecting them and where they needed help most.  Most were confused about the virus and how to prevent it and worried about not having enough food to eat.

With families needing information about COVID-19, food, help keeping hands clean and children occupied, we have focused on giving ongoing COVID-19 related information, hand washing and nutritional supplies, as well as home learning support.

1,354 play packs for children stuck at home

Our education team has worked hard to design and assemble a pack to keep children learning and having fun during the long hours at home.

An audio clip was sent to all parents with tips on how to use the pack.

Improved nutrition for cash-strapped families

We have distributed 3,248 bags of Tender Mercies, a highly nutritious packaged meal families;  2,000 kindly donated by Midwest Food Bank.

Langata Rotary Club also generously gave us an extra 400 bags of Tender Mercies and 140kg of cornflour

Information and advice

Our team has worked hard to give the community clear information on how COVID-19 is transmitted, and how to avoid catching it. Initiatives include:

* Printing and distributing 3,000 health and safety posters in partnership with Nairobi County Government whose Community Taskforce we were invited to sit on. * Running hygiene talks at public and daycare handwashing stations, giving out soap and bleach. * Giving advice on our freephone number, sending daily texts.
